David Laverne Gross died on June 28, 2025 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Colorado at the age of 84. He was born in Kankakee, Illinois in 1940 to Laverne and Lois. As a child, David grew up in Davenport, IA after the family moved there in 1948. He graduated from St. Ambrose high school.
During his early years, he was an avid golfer who competed in numerous tournaments including the Iowa Amateur State Tournament that he won in 1962. Competitive golf remained a passion throughout his life and he even competed as an amateur in the U.S. Senior Open.
David graduated with a bachelor's degree from St. Ambrose University and obtained a PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1969 he became a Professor of History at the University of Colorado-Boulder where he taught until he retired in 2018. He was a prolific writer, publishing more than 60 articles in academic journals and three books.
David resided in Boulder for more than 50 years. He is survived by his sisters Carole and Judy, his sons David and Stefan, and his grandchildren Megan, Murphy, Harrison and Sophie. He is preceded in death by his wife Ruthanne.
