David Williams

July 21, 1928 — July 22, 2024

David John Williams, aged 96, of Lyons, Colorado, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024.

Born in London, England on July 21, 1928, David lived with a never ending curiosity and his willingness to try just about anything. As a young man, David briefly served in the Royal Air Force before embarking on a successful career in the insurance industry. He spent the first eight years of his career in India where he met and married his wife, Ruth Huntington, an American working for the U.S. State Department in Calcutta, India.

Shortly after their 1958 wedding, David and Ruth moved to San Francisco where their twins, John and Kathryn, were born, and then on to New Mexico where their son, James, was born. Work assignments moved the family to Denver in 1964, and, ten years later, to Chicago.

In 1990, Ruth and David retired to Lyons, Colorado, where David pursued varied interests. He became a certified master gardener, set up an elaborate woodworking shop, baked bread every week, and became a tomato grower. He joined the Lions Club and served as a Lyons Township trustee. Always a voracious reader, he was a regular at the Longmont Library and grew and sold tomato plants to benefit the Lyons Library. After Ruth died in 1998, David kept her memory alive during the positive and active life he led over the next 25 years.

David is survived by his children, John L. Williams (Eileen Gilbride) and Kathryn H. Rolfes (James), both of Boulder, CO, James T. Williams (Heather) of River Falls, WI,, and his grandchildren, Martin, Sam, Claire, and Eva. His memory will also be treasured by his sisters, Dorothy Hardy and Irene Laher. David was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Huntington Williams, his brother, Lewis Williams, his sister, Patricia Davies, and his parents, Llewellyn Lewis Williams and Ellen Ware Williams.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in David's memory to the Lyons Library, a cause close to his heart. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered for demonstrating to us all that you can always learn new things no matter how old you are and you should never take yourself too seriously - keys to a good long life.
