John Marshall Matthews Jr., affectionately known as Jay, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, at the age of 64, at Winding Trails Post Acute in Boulder, Colorado.
Born on January 11, 1961, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jay's early life saw him attend high school at Campion Academy in Loveland, Colorado. He then ventured to California for higher education, attending La Sierra College. Jay fell in love with California, choosing to live there for many years after college, where he built a career as a skilled computer technician.
In 2012, after the passing of his father, John Marshall Matthews Sr., Jay returned to Colorado. Though a talented technician, Jay's true passion and defining life work lay in helping others. He dedicated nearly 25 years to his sobriety and, in turn, became a beacon of hope and support for countless individuals seeking recovery. Jay was a devoted sponsor, a tireless leader at meetings, and even continued to guide several Zoom meetings a week from his Colorado home for those he supported in California. His commitment to sharing his experience, strength, and hope left an indelible mark on many lives.
Jay was also known for his deep and personal faith. He was baptized in his youth, at 8 years old, while the family lived in Burlington, Vermont. He shared a unique, loving relationship with God, whom he affectionately referred to as "Bud." His spirit was contagious, and he will forever be remembered for his big smile and his distinctive, guttural laugh that brightened any room.
Jay was preceded in death by his beloved father, John Marshall Matthews Sr., and his mother, Carole Laverne Matthews, who passed away just six weeks prior to Jay.
He is survived by his devoted brother, Mark Matthews; his loving sister-in-law, Lisè Matthews; and his two cherished nieces, Jessie and Jordan Matthews. Jay also leaves behind a large extended family of loving cousins, aunts, and uncles. His legacy of kindness, resilience, and unwavering dedication to helping others will continue to inspire all who knew him.
The family has chosen to remember Jay in Memorial on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 3:00PM at Boulder Seventh-day Adventist Church, 345 Mapleton Ave, Boulder, CO 80304. There will be a small reception to follow.
