Ross, Joseph

1944-2025

Joseph Ross was born on February 11, 1944, in La Junta, Colorado, to parents Burgess Earl and Mary Irene Schultz. From a young age, Joe found joy in nature, spending much of his childhood fishing and camping with his family. Holbrook Lake in La Junta became a favorite spot for fly fishing, but Joe's adventures took him to streams all over Colorado. For him, fishing was about the enjoyment of the chase and the satisfaction of releasing his quarry.

At six years old, Joe discovered his lifelong passion for geology. He spent countless hours climbing Mount Antero, Colorado, seeking out mineral specimens such as aquamarine and smoky quartz-treasures that remain in his mineral cabinet to this day.

Joe earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science and Chemistry from Adams State College in Alamosa. Shortly after graduating in June 1966, he received his draft notice and enlisted in the United States Navy. Accepted into officer's training, Joe moved to the Naval Air Station at Quonset Point, Rhode Island, serving in tactical electronic warfare. He was later stationed at Whidbey Island, Washington, where he continued his love of fishing, once landing a shark on a fueling dock. During his military service, Joe cruised on the USS Saratoga and USS Enterprise aircraft carriers. He was promoted to Lieutenant on November 1, 1970, and flew 52 combat missions in the Vietnam war. After leaving active duty, Joe served in the Naval Reserves for four more years.

Following his military service, Joe attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, earning a master's degree in geology. He began teaching chemistry in high school, then geology at Metro State College.

Joe's career as a petroleum geologist spanned Colorado and Wyoming, including work with Amoco in Denver. He retired from the oil and gas industry in 2004 but stayed active, working for The Sunnywood Collection, mounting mineral specimens for public and private collections.

Joe was renowned for his rapport with animals, finding joy and comfort in the company of his horses, dogs, and cats. His quick wit and sense of humor brightened the lives of those around him. Above all, he was a kind and compassionate father and husband.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ross; his daughter, Hillary Ross (Tony Rossiter); two grandchildren, Hannah and James; and two brothers, Dan and Jim Ross.

A memorial service will be held at Chapel Hill Church, 10 Chapel Hill Drive, Brighton, CO 80601 on August 12th at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's honor may be made to The Davis Phinney Foundation, PO Box 270948, Louisville, CO 80027, or Humane Colorado (formerly Dumb Friends League) at humanecolorado.org.
