Judy Hickey

April 15, 1941 - October 6, 2025

Judy arrived in the spring of 1941 in the small town of Carroll Iowa, where the Hogan and Colgan families resided. Things would change as Judie's dad finished law school and started work with his job. That would lead to several moves in the Midwest and finally to New York and a home in Stamford Connecticut.

Being the oldest of the five Hogan children she liked to think of herself as not only the big sister but also mom's faithful helper around the house. That was a skill and devotion she would apply in later years as her own family began to grow.

High school in the 50's included fun times, but also a desire to go on to college. Initially she thought that she would go to law school, but father had different ideas. Being from the Midwest he was of the opinion that a dose of strong Midwest culture would serve her well through the years. As it happened the family had a relative (an aunt) that taught at Marycrest College in Davenport Iowa. So, in the fall of 1959 Judy was off to the great Midwest, a move that changed our lives. Jack had graduated from Mt. Carmel High school in Chicago and was enrolling in St Ambrose College, also in Davenport.

A chance meeting at a local pub offered an opportunity to find someone to type a paper that I had to submit. Judy volunteered to type it and when she rejected any payment for the effort, I decided to ask her out. The rest is history.

After college we decided to marry in the fall of 1963 in Stamford Connecticut. It was back to Chicago for both of us, where I was working in Public Accounting and Judy was at the outset of raising our family.

The family grew with five boys arriving by 1972. Needless to say, she had her hands full all of the time, but she gladly accepted the challenge. The youngest Megan, came along in 1978, a pleasant surprise, Judy finally had her girl. While the kids were growing, she handled five moves from Chiago to New York to Connecticut to Western New York to Minnesota and finally to Colorado. We decided that we would stay in the West and that gave her a needed break from moving and the opportunity to develop new friendships. Many of which have survived the test of time.

Judy always loved the mountains, so when we decided to retire, we checked one off the bucket list and moved to the mountains. Fourteen wonderful years, new friends and a great community. The elevation in the mountains was not helpful to her medical condition, so we decided to check off another item and moved to Arizona. She was involved with a Guild at our parish there that helped her develop friendships that lasted well beyond Arizona. A great group of ladies. As time went by, we decided to return to Colorado to be closer to family, especially to many of the grandchildren. Judy had a special place in her heart for all the grandchildren.

We were able to see many friends and family earlier this year as we took a road trip to Florida and then up the East Coast to New Jersey and home by way of Chicago and Kansas City. She loved to travel.

Her medical condition deteriorated during the summer months after hospitalization in the spring. Emergency surgery on October 4th, was unable to contain the problem. She passed on October 6th in the evening. She seemed very much at peace as she slowly passed. With her at bedside were four of the kids, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, one granddaughter, two grandsons and a fiancée.

May She Rest in Peace
