Paul Anthony Kucera

April 2, 1969- May 31, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved son, husband, father,

brother, and friend, Paul Kucera. Never one to shy away from adventure, Paul

embraced life with curiosity, compassion, and a drive to leave the world a better place.

Whether exploring a new city, mentoring a student, or spending time with his wife and

kids, he approached each day with enthusiasm, kindness, and an unwavering sense of

purpose.

Paul Anthony Kucera was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on April 2, 1969, and grew up in

Bemidji, where his love of the outdoors first took root. He graduated from Bemidji High

School before earning his bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Science from the University

of North Dakota and master's degree in Atmospheric Science from Texas Tech

University. He later completed his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the

University of Iowa in 2002.

Paul dedicated his professional life to advancing atmospheric and environmental

science. His career included positions with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and

as Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of North Dakota. Most

recently, he served as Assistant Director of COMET at the University Corporation for

Atmospheric Research where he helped support development of hydrometeorological

programs with 3D-PAWS. Throughout his career, Paul was respected not only for his

expertise and accomplishments but also for his willingness to mentor, collaborate, and

inspire others.

Paul was passionate about helping others and loved the opportunities his work provided

to explore the world. He often shared with pride that he had visited all 50 states and

every continent except Antarctica. His adventures took him to countless places, but he

found equal joy in everyday moments spent with those he loved. When not traveling,

Paul enjoyed playing tennis at the Broomfield Swim and Tennis Club, hiking, skiing,

sharing stories, listening to his favorite band U2, cooking, laughing, and experiencing

something new.

Above all, Paul was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, a proud father, a

caring son and brother, and a loyal friend. His encouragement, wisdom, dad-joke

humor, and adventurous spirit touched the lives of all who knew him.

Paul passed away on May 31, 2026, at the age of 57 due to complications from a

traumatic brain injury. Surrounded by the love of his family, he continued his lifelong

commitment to helping others through the gift of organ donation. He is survived by his

wife, Michell; daughters, Katie and Madison; and son, Ryan; parents, Pete and Sandy

Kucera; sister, Amy Kucera (Claton Gardner); and nephews, Nash and Seth. He also

leaves behind countless friends, colleagues, students, and other loved ones.

Words cannot adequately express our gratitude for the privilege of sharing in Paul's life

and love. His legacy of curiosity, service, adventure, and compassion will live on in the

many lives he touched. He will remain forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, etc. consider memorial donations to the Brain Injury Alliance of

Colorado at biacolorado.org or Donor Alliance at donoralliance.org. Memorial services

anticipated in October 2026 with more details to follow.
